Red Cherry Shrimp

Red Cherry Shrimp (Neocaridina heteropoda var. “red”) are a popular variety of freshwater shrimp often kept in aquariums. They are known for their vibrant red color and their hardiness, which makes them suitable for beginners. They are also very active and easy to breed. They are typically kept in a community tank with other small, peaceful fish and thrive in a well-maintained aquarium with a stable pH level of 6.5-8.0. They prefer a temperature range of 64-78°F and are able to tolerate a wide range of water conditions. Additionally, they are known to eat algae and other debris, which helps keep the tank clean.

Captive Care

Captive care for Red Cherry Shrimp includes providing them with a suitable aquarium and maintaining the proper water conditions.

The aquarium should be at least 5 gallons, with a secure lid to prevent escape. A heater and a filter are also necessary to maintain a stable temperature and clean water. They do not require a specific water flow, but a moderate flow is recommended.

It’s important to maintain a stable pH level between 6.5-8.0 and the water hardness should be between 4-8 dGH. Regular water changes are necessary to keep the water clean and maintain the proper water chemistry.

In terms of substrate, Red Cherry Shrimp prefer a fine-grained substrate that is not too sharp. They also appreciate some hiding spots like caves, rocks, or plants. They are not picky about lighting and can tolerate low to moderate lighting.

Diet-wise, they are opportunistic feeders and will eat a variety of foods, including algae, blanched vegetables, and commercial shrimp pellets. They also appreciate a variety of small live or frozen foods.

Finally, it is important to note that Red Cherry Shrimp are very sensitive to copper and other heavy metals, which can be found in tap water and some medications. Therefore, it’s always best to use a dechlorinator or aged tap water and avoid using medications unless absolutely necessary.
