- Fill a test tube with a small amount of water from your tank.
- Add a few drops of the nitrate test reagent to the water in the test tube.
- Shake the test tube to mix the reagent with the water.
- Compare the color of the water in the test tube to the color chart provided with the kit to determine the nitrate level in your tank.
- Repeat the test at least once a month or as necessary to monitor nitrate levels in your tank.
- Adjust water changes and filtration as necessary to maintain nitrate levels within the acceptable range for the types of fish and plants in your tank.
Note: it’s important to read the instructions carefully that come with the kit and also to make sure that you are testing at the right time of the day and water temperature to get accurate reading.
